An Overview of Your First Visit
Chiropractic Care is
the third largest health care profession which specializes in natural and preventive care. It is a
science based on the fact that a properly functioning nervous system is
essential to the restoration and maintenance of optimum health.
The largest nerve canal in the body is the spinal canal.
Research has proven that irritation to
nerves where they leave the spinal canal can lead to dysfunction, pain
and disability. Dysfunction is abnormal, increased or decreased
function. Chiropractors refer to the group of signs and symptoms
resulting from spinal dysfunction as the "VERTEBRAL
SUBLUXATION COMPLEX". Subluxations cause problems not only with
the nerves, muscles, tendons and bones but with the body's internal
organs.
Some symptoms associated with the vertebral subluxation complex may
be noticed only after the dysfunction is well advanced. There are
periods in every degenerative process during which you experience no
overt symptoms. When the pain is ultimately realized, the latest or most
obvious incident or injury may be identified as causing the pain. In
fact, the condition has existed for a considerable period of time. It is
important to understand that dysfunction can exist even without
significant discomfort or pain.
The chiropractor's job is to determine where dysfunction exists and
to correct it and the underlying problems which cause it.
-
To begin your first visit, you will fill out a health
questionnaire for the doctor to review. Then, your chiropractor will
conduct an exhaustive consultation and take a complete patient
history to find out everything possible about your situation. If
this investigation indicates you have a problem amenable to
chiropractic care, you will continue on to a physical examination.
Dependent on the outcome of the examination, x-rays may be
necessary. Further diagnostic procedures may be needed to insure a
complete and accurate diagnosis. If this sounds pretty typical of
what you might expect in any doctor's office, you're right!
-
Following review of the information collected, your
chiropractor
will provide you with a complete report of findings. The case
history, examination and x-ray findings will be fully explained
along with the diagnosis (what's wrong), prognosis (will you get
better and how long will it take) and specific recommendations for
care. If your condition requires additional or alternate care,
referral may be necessary as no one can care for everything.
-
If chiropractic care will help your condition, treatment may
begin. Spinal manipulation, known as a chiropractic
adjustment , is the primary form of
treatment. Various adjustive techniques will be used to correct the
dysfunction in your spine. The adjustments correct vertebral
subluxations and restore proper function in all related structures.
Additional measures may be recommended including
exercises ,
rehabilitation services and advice
concerning changes in employment activities and lifestyle.
Chiropractors are highly trained health care
providers with considerable knowledge, training and expertise in
conservative health care management and provide quality health care.
Chiropractic care is effective and cost-effective and enjoys
considerable patient satisfaction. For these reasons, chiropractic has
grown rapidly to one of the largest primary health care disciplines.
